What is the recommend way to debug an Editor crash?

I am using both Mono Develop and Visual Studio 2013 Community Edition. In both cases the Editor crashes on attaching the debugger. The current state of the game runs fine in the editor, and externally when not debugging.

I am looking for a general tutorial or set of steps to use to tack down what is causing this. Even if it is to get a valid dump for submitting as an issue.

I am really concerned that a fairly simple project is causing the editor to crash in this way. And would like to get a little more information about what is going on.
