Question by Ender2718 · Jul 15, 2015 at 03:31 PM · mecanim

Is it possible to add rotation to root motion of an animation?

I have a walk forward animation that contains root motion, the motion is simply along the forward direction at a particular speed.

I would like to make a copy of this animation (that is a clip cut from a single fbx containing many animations), and add a rotational component to the movement. For example add a 20 deg/s rotation, resulting in the characters motion being a curve instead of a straight line. I would actually like to create several variations of the animation for left and right turns at different rotational speeds.

Is this in any way possible?

The idea is that I have a set of animations all with nice root motion built in, but I do not have animations like WalkForwardTurningLeft or WalkForwardTurningRight. I would like to create those animations based on the original WalkForward animation, so that I may use them in a 2D blend tree to essentially steer the character (Like in Unity's "Stealth" demo for the robot enemy character).

Is this possible and if so how would I do it?

Thx, -Ryan

You should use this

http://docs.unity3d.com/ScriptReference/$$anonymous$$onoBehaviour.OnAnimator$$anonymous$$ove.html

but you can also have success by perfor$$anonymous$$g the rotations in LateUpdate()

So you are suggesting not to copy and modify particular animations (that contain translational root motion) by adding a root motion rotational component, and then adding variations of those to a 2D blend tree for steering, but to perform steering by directly affecting rotational velocity in code and rely on root motion to affect translational velocity?

Did you use root motion for rotation in the end? I've had problems with it - if my animation ends at 20 degrees, and I've rotated my root motion bone by 20 degrees, the animation runs to 40 degrees, then snaps back to 20 degrees!
