How to make sound change based on location on the terrain?

I'm looking for a way to change my character's footsteps based on the physics matrial of the terrain they are on. I'm not sure how to implement this as the terrain only has one collider and it affects the entire terrain and not just specific sections. Should I just try to do this by using other colliders to tell where I am on the terrain and apply my own physics in those locations?

Ex: I want normal footsteps on dirt, grass footsteps on grass, mud footsteps in mud, and walking through water, with changes to friction on each.

Did you Search? I looked at Google's search results for 'unity footsteps' which contains many tutorials, vids, etc.

I'm pretty sure there are many ways to implement this, for instance, if you already know how to play the footsteps sound, you could just do a raycast to the ground to look what you are stepping on (maybe look for a tag of the collided object) and then change the footstep sound to the desired one.

Check directly for the surface's material, you will be quickly limited with tags :)
