2D Tile-based Drag Selection Box

I'm trying to figure out the best way to create a 2D tile-based drag selection box that scales incrementally. In other words, say I start dragging from (0,0) and move my mouse over to (3,3) I want my selection box to be exactly 3 tiles high and 3 tiles wide.

I have tried doing this using GUI.Box along with OnMouseDrag. This has had mixed results so far. Mostly, I feel like my brain is melting and I'm having trouble deciding what sort of input my box needs, as I'm getting confused by ScreenPointToRay, WorldToScreenPoint and Input.MousePosition. I'm also starting to wonder if I should consider another method.

What is the best way to go about this ?
