Specular VertexLit with Z not working in Animation

I'm trying to fade a GameObject in the Animation window using the "Specular VertexLit with Z" shader found at http://wiki.unity3d.com/index.php?title=AlphaVertexLitZ. The reason I need to use this shader is because my GameObject is concave and needs to fade uniformly (something the Standard shader cannot do).

Here's what I'm doing:

  1. Create the "Specular VertexLit with Z" shader in Unity

  2. Create a new material and assign the shader to the material

  3. Create a cube GameObject and attach the material

  4. With the cube selected, I click on the Create button in the Animation window.

  5. In the Animation window, I click on Add Property>Mesh Renderer>Material._Color>+

  6. I select the last Keyframe and set the Material._Color.a property to zero

  7. I press the Play button and nothing happens visually. I see the alpha channel changing in my material in the Inspector, but not in the Editor or Camera.

If I follow these steps with the Standard shader (set to Transparent mode), it works. I really need this shader because I need my concave (it's a cup btw) to fade, but I also need to use it in an animation. How can I make this work?
