Question by ThomasVandenberghe · Sep 04, 2015 at 12:21 PM · wwwuploadwwwformhttppost

Upload large files

Hi, our new project would require users to upload potentially large files, I'm currently testing with 1MB, 5MB, 50MB and 500MB files, the first ones work pretty good. Yet the 500MB gives the following error:

 OutOfMemoryException: Out of memory
 System.IO.MemoryStream.set_Capacity (Int32 value) (at /Users/builduser/buildslave/mono-runtime-and-classlibs/build/mcs/class/corlib/System.IO/MemoryStream.cs:170)
 System.IO.MemoryStream.Expand (Int32 newSize) (at /Users/builduser/buildslave/mono-runtime-and-classlibs/build/mcs/class/corlib/System.IO/MemoryStream.cs:327)
 System.IO.MemoryStream.Write (System.Byte[] buffer, Int32 offset, Int32 count) (at /Users/builduser/buildslave/mono-runtime-and-classlibs/build/mcs/class/corlib/System.IO/MemoryStream.cs:394)
 UnityEngine.WWWForm.get_data ()
 UnityEngine.WWW..ctor (System.String url, UnityEngine.WWWForm form)

The 50MB still works on the iMac, but on device it crashes the app when trying to add the binary data to the WWWForm.

T$$anonymous$$s is the code we are using at the moment.

 System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch s = new System.Diagnostics.Stopwatch();
 s.Start();

 using (WWW localFile = new WWW("file://" + Application.streamingAssetsPath + "/dummy_500m.txt"))
 {
     w$$anonymous$$le (!localFile.isDone) yield return null;

     if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(localFile.error))
     {
         // Successful access to local file
         WWWForm wwwForm = new WWWForm();
         wwwForm.AddBinaryData("file", localFile.bytes, "dummy.txt", "text/plain");

         using (WWW upload = new WWW("http://posttestserver.com/post.php?dir=Thomas", wwwForm))
         {
             w$$anonymous$$le (!upload.isDone)
             {
                 Debug.Log("Progress : " + upload.uploadProgress.ToString("P2"));
                 yield return null;
             }

             if (string.IsNullOrEmpty(upload.error))
             {
                 Debug.Log("Successful upload to server");
             }
             else
             {
                 Debug.LogError("Error uploading file to server\n" + upload.error);
             }
         }
     }
     else
     {
         Debug.LogError("Error loading file 'file://" + Application.streamingAssetsPath + "/dummy_500m.txt");
     }
 }

 s.Stop();

 Debug.Log("Total time : " + s.Elapsed.ToString());

Now a couple of questions:

  • Am I doing the right t$$anonymous$$ng using WWWForm to upload large files?

  • Is there a possibility to stream the files from device and use the stream for the upload for large files (>100MB)?

  • Is there an option to do a multipart upload for medium files (+-50MB)?

Thanks in advance, Thomas
