Question by ohokke · Nov 20, 2015 at 02:03 PM · shaderbugpost-process-effect

Shader bug: property IDs clash?

I had a post processing effect that worked perfectly on the pc, but failed to work on Android devices.

 float4 frag(v2f_img i) : COLOR
 {
     half2 center = half2(_xCenter, _yCenter);
     if (_distort != 0)
     {
         half2 diff = center - i.uv;
         float distance = length(diff);
         if (distance < 0.01) i.uv = float2(0, 0);
     }
     return tex2D(_MainTex, i.uv);;
 }

This should display a little dot on the screen where my script told the shader that "x center" and "y center" should be in UV screen space. For some reason, on android devices, the shader thought that the center was not at (x,y), but (x,x) causing the effect only to work on a single diagonal on the screen.

After renaming _yCenter to _yPosition, the issue was fixed.... I am guessing that Shader.PropertyToID was internally called and caused an ID clash??

Anyway, a video to show the problem in effect: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNQgZOAH2Xw

I am having the issue with unity 5.1.3 and 5.2.2. Didn't try any other version.

After a bit of meddling with it, it turns out not to be just the name. In the video I already had a few changes done: moved around the variables and not just changed the name. Later when I put everything back to normal but with different names, the bug appeared again. So, after moving around the variables again, significant rena$$anonymous$$g etc etc, I got it working again. But really, I can't pinpoint what really caused it..
