Can I bake cookies?

Hello, I wonder if you could help.

I'm currently baking lightmaps in my scene and would like to bake in a cookie light. Baking a cookie light causes the cookie to vanish and only the base light to then lightmap. I have done a test where upon I have applied an alpha ( cutout and fade ) material to a standard plane (set to static ) and then placed a baking light above it to bake the shape of the textures alpha into a lightmap. This works great but has less functionality than a cookie light but seems to be basically doing the same thing. Is the cookie baking problem a bug ? or am I doing something wrong?

Any info on this would be great.

John.
