CG Shader that lerps color based on height

The more a mesh goes up, i want the color to lerp to transparent. Can someone please guide me to a good source? There are literally no good cg tutorials that explain the pipelines and the meaning of certain keywords.

It is somewhat working now, but it has a view problem.

When I move the camera view, sometimes I get these viewpoints where the transparency turns grey like the skybox, as shown on this cube:

Code:

 Shader "Custom/Spawn" {

     Properties
     {
         _Color ("Color", Color) = (1,1,1,1)
         _Cutoff ("Alpha Cutoff", Range (0, 1)) = 0
     }

     SubShader
     {
         Blend SrcAlpha One$$anonymous$$inusSrcAlpha
         Tags
         {
             "RenderType" = "Transparent"
         }

         Pass
         {
             CGPROGRA$$anonymous$$

             #pragma vertex vert
             #pragma fragment frag

             float4 _Color;
             float _Lerp;

             struct VertexInput {
                 float4 vertex : POSITION;
             };

             struct VertexOutput {
                 float4 pos : POSITION;
                 float4 col : COLOR;
             };

             VertexOutput vert (VertexInput input) {
                 VertexOutput output;
                 output.col = _Color;
                 output.col.a = normalize (-input.vertex).y;
                 output.pos = mul (UNITY_$$anonymous$$ATRIX_$$anonymous$$VP, input.vertex);
                 return output;
             }

             float4 frag (VertexOutput output) : COLOR {
                 return output.col;
             }

             ENDCG
         }
     }
 }

First of all, it doesnt lerp when past the transparency height, a variable setup to deter$$anonymous$$e where the color lerps on the model. If i set it to 0.5, for example, I want it to start lerping from the halfway point all the way to the top, but I cant seem to achieve this. Also as seen above it has a skybox issue.

Use ZWrite Off for most transparent shaders so the object doesn't write to the depth buffer and stop objects behind it from being rendered.

@maccabbe I see that it got rid of the grey issue, but now at some other viewpoints its completely invisible :(
