Creating Eve-like planets/star systems

I'm trying to put together a solar system, similar to Eve or Kerbal, where the planets/stars are actually huge objects and not just part of the skybox. I'm not interesting in actually being able to land on them or anything.

However, it's cumbersome to do this in the scene editor. If I make a giant, planet size sphere (actually it's not even truly planet size, probably 1/10th Earth's size), I can't even zoom out far enough in the Scene editor to manipulate it in any easy way, let alone move around enough to create other planets. It was a little better if I made the planet like 100x scale and then scaled my ships/asteroids down to .1 scale, but still very cumbersome.

I take it I'm on the wrong track here. Whats the best way to create huge game objects like planets in a scene?

Sounds like you're just needing to know more about moving around in the editor. A neat trick is to position empties are reference points, using the Inspector to set their position.

You simply cannot implement this at that scale (nor 1-1 scale) since Unity transforms will start to fail with distances greater to 10,000 units due to precision issues (it uses floats).

If you are not going to approach too much to the planets, you may use the trick of having them at a constant distance from the Camera with a scale that fits enough screen space. As they will seem static at that distance they will give the illusion they're really big (you may update their positions every frame in relation with the Camera to force them stay at a constant distance from the camera).

If you need some planet UI interaction like highlighting some countries from the space or setting some target, I'd recommend World Political $$anonymous$$ap Globe Edition (I'm the creator) as it comes with entire source code with the functionality you may need (atmosphere scattering, high-res texturing, country highlighting, ...) - take a look at this video: https://youtu.be/gWJWt6y3gtg
