how do I trigger a different game object outside a script?

I'm making a puzzle game and there are two characters to display the status of the game. And I'm having a diffilculty making my player animate. The idea is that when the puzzle is matched and my "block" gameobject is Destroyed, my "player" gameobject will animate according to the trigger. And that's the problem I'm facing. I can't seem to trigger any conditions in my player gameobject animator. Can someone help me with this? (I've searched the threads and I couldn't find a useful answer)
