How to achieve realistic car damage system like burnout 3.

Hi, unity community. I have been looking for a way to implement a realistic car damage system for the last couple of days, I have tried to deform the mesh on a collision and it works okay.., but it just doesn't give the desired effect I am looking for. I tried to find information on the subject on the web, but haven't been able to find any blogs or videos that teaches, or explain to you how to make your car damage so realistic. It would be nice if someone in the community had the time to give a good explanation on how they achieve this effect.

I Should Probably mention that I want to make the system myself, and avoid assets for learning purposes.
