Opaque Alpha is Transparent?

Unity Pro 5.3.4f1

Using the Standard shader (or any other shader I've tried so far)... I have a PSD or PNG with alpha in the Albedo slot. The alpha has areas that are completely white 255,255,255 yet these areas show as semi-transparent?

When the Rendering Mode is set to Opaque... these areas are properly opaque. When set to Cutout mode, these areas are also properly opaque... but of course I totally loose the fading areas of the alpha with this mode. If set to Fade or Transparent... these areas show as semi-transparent.

Is it possible to get the 100% opaque areas of the bitmap alpha to show properly in the shader as 100% opaque while still retaining the fading transparent areas of the alpha?

Thanks for any ideas!

Oh and the 'Alpha is Transparency' is checked in the texture settings... yet the 100% opaque alpha still shows as semi-transparent.
