menus panels

Hi everybody.

So I a beginner in both unity and C# and have been trying to make a simple game. My question is about panels/canvas groups and such. So I have 6 buttons and each opens a new panel(can use something else instead of panels), I did figure a way to open a panel when I click a button but the problem is the panels that were opened before stays on screen until I close it and then open a new panel.

What would be a better way todo this.

this is the C# code I use

public class TogglePanelButton : MonoBehaviour

{

public void TogglePanel (GameObject panel)

     {
         panel.SetActive (!panel.activeSelf);
         }

}

so it makes an invisible panel become active and deactive again when I press the same button. But for ex when I click options and open options panel and then click upgrades, upgrades panels opens but the previous options panels stays behind the new upgrades panel.

is there a simple work around or should I go figure statemachine, animations or use canvas group or something?
