Manual public referencement or script side ?

Hello everyone !

I got a script that manage content in my UI elements like button, text, panel etc ... So this script needs reference to those elements to modify them.

For exemple, in an inventory menu, i'm speaking about the text and image of an item displayed in a box when selected, some reference to elements that creates sort of differents tabs, some référence to panels to instantiate some UI prefab etc ...

Does it's a good way to do to make all these reference public and fill it in the inspector ? Or a script side referencing will be better ?

Big question. Just like "Pepsi or Coke" or which way to hang the toilet paper :)

All Unity turotials and samples i see make excessive use of the "drag object into public variable slot". If you follow that you're probbaly on the safe side.

I personally hate it and avoid it where ever possible :) I think the bigger a project becomes, the more confusing it will get. I'm a Unity beginner and was asked to look into a relatively small puzzle game lately. With all the cross-references between scripts and objects and variables it was a nightmare trying to understand the structure of the game.

But then again, maybe i just need more experience.
