Need help with swapping Animation Controllers

Hi all,

So I have two phases in my game - one is from a side scroller point of view and the second is typical third person view.

At the moment the Side Scroller controller uses V+H speed to control the animations which works great. Problem is, when I switch to Third Person and try to walk "back" (or simply put, in the negative X direction) the animations still abide by the same parameters.

So I figured I'll make a new controller for the third person view. My current swapping code is as follows:

 animator = this.gameObject.GetComponent<Animator>();
             animator.runtimeAnimatorController = Resources.Load("3DController") as RuntimeAnimatorController;


Only when the "If" condition is met, Unity simply removes the current controller and when I check the Player object the Controller is set to "None (Runtime Animator Controller")

If there is any more necessary information I'd be happy to provide it.
