Mahjong Tiles: One texture for all tiles or one texture for each tile?

alt text Pictured: an old Flash 2D version of a mahjong solitaire game I plan to rebuild in 3D using Unity

With the interest of building a full game in Unity3D (mainly for training purposes), I'm going to start with a space-themed take on a classic: mahjong solitaire.

Regarding tile texture(s), would you recommend one texture for all tiles (with UV map x/y position of front face altered for each tile), or would you recommend one texture per tile?

I read (source misplaced over time) that combining textures for game pieces may help Unity engine perform better. I'm not quite sure how the offset would work yet (I can look that up, not the purpose of this question), but I also imagine that the size of the combined texture for many tile designs would be rather large. Wouldn't that slow things down?

The advantage I see of a combined single texture is the cool randomizing effects that could be applied (e.g. a randomizing torpedo hits the board and everything goes crazy as it settles into new tile assignments, no texture loading flickers as this happens perhaps?).

My goal is to build this game while being as kind to performance requirements as possible. Knowing the best way to go about building textures for this puzzle game will help me greatly.
