Question by alorzadeh · Dec 06, 2016 at 04:11 AM · 2d rotation

Rotating a circle in 2D?

Hi,

I'm very new at this. My player object is a circle with three hooks attached. This object can only rotate clockwise or counter clockwise using right and left buttons. Like the figure below: alt text

I'm not sure where to start? Any help would be appreciated.

First off, assuming you know the very basics of coding (and assuming you use c#), you should learn about transform.rotate, this is the piece of code that will rotate your object. Also know which axis you want to rotate (x,y,z).

Here's a basic script for you which you can start with,

     Transform trans; //giving Transform a reference

     void Awake() //When game starts...
     {
         trans = GetComponent<Transform> (); //return a component to our "trans:
     }

     void Update() //every frame...
     {
         if (Input.GetKey(KeyCode.LeftArrow)) //check if the player is pressing the left arrow key...
         {
             trans.Rotate (-1, 0, 0); //if the player is, then rotate counterclockwise in the x axis
         }
         else if (Input.GetKey(KeyCode.RightArrow)) // if he isnt then check if he is pressing the right arrow key...
         {
             trans.Rotate (1, 0, 0); //if he is, then rotate clockwise in the x axis
         }
     }
 }

It should make the circle rotate in the x axis with the left and right arrow keys. Hope it helps!

Thank you. I am new to C#. I have been using python and perl. Very Helpful. This is what I used.

public class RotateBeads : MonoBehaviour {

 private float turningSpeed = 2f;
 private float moveHorizontal;
 private Vector3 movement;

 // Update is called once per frame
 void Update() {
     moveHorizontal = Input.GetAxisRaw ("Horizontal");
     // Rotate the object around its local Z axis at defined speed
     transform.Rotate( new Vector3(0, 0, moveHorizontal * turningSpeed), Space.Self );
 }

}
