Scrub animation based on Vive controller trigger press?

Hello... I have created a custom hand model & animation in 3DSMax and imported as FBX into Unity. I want to close the hand according to how far the Vive controller trigger has been pulled...

I am trying to SendMessage(Clench, e.padX) to the child model/animation (with argument e.padX as the result of a TriggerClicked event on the SteamVR_TrackedController), but it doesn't seem to work:

 public class ClenchHand : MonoBehaviour {
  
     Animator animator;
  
     // Use this for initialization
     void Start () {
         animator = GetComponent<Animator>();
     }
    
     // Update is called once per frame
     void Clench (float val) {
         animator.speed = 0.00001f;
         animator.Play("clench", -1, val);
     }
 }
