Best way to synch script & animController?

my current state:

the user input controls a script which then sets trigger in the animController. but the script reads the current Animatorstateinfo, as p.e. an attack is only allowed when the windup is complete / a windup is only allowed in an idle state

so the update function goes roughly like this:

if(animstate == AnimState.idle && inpAxAttack > 0f) anim.SetTrigger (AttackHash); & deal damge etc.

the problem with this is that the animcontroller does not seem to update at the same rate as my script, which results in the damage code being executed multiple times before the animationstate changes.

is there a better practice to synch the script & animController?

an earlier solution was to simulate the animController in the script to know when animations have ended, but the complexity got out of hand & it was unreliable. so i switched to my current solution

i am currently using the update function in my script, is there an onaminationupdate function i should use instead?

any help appreciated, p.e. if you know a nice tutorial on how to do this
