Set limit on object's z position

Hi all,

I an new to unity and coding and am trying to write a script that allows the user to move an object in positive/negative z direction with the mouse scrollwheel but only by a certain amount (i.e. can't move the object more than z= +/-5). So far my mouse scrollwheel to move the object's z position works but I am trying to set limits and get no error messages but it doesn't work. Here is the code I am using: using UnityEngine; using System.Collections;

public class ZoomObj2 : MonoBehaviour { //Input.GetAxis("Mouse ScrollWheel") public GameObject target;

 public float zZoomFactor=0.5f;

 public int zoomMin=5;
 public int zoomMax=-5;

 private float mouseZInitial;

 // Use this for initialization

 // Update is called once per frame
 void Update () {
     if (Input.GetMouseButtonDown(2)){
         Debug.Log("MiddleMouse Pressed");

         mouseZInitial = Input.mousePosition.z;

     }
     //if mouse is scrolled backward
     if (Input.GetAxis ("Mouse ScrollWheel")>0f ) {
         Debug.Log ("MiddleMouseScrollBackward");

         target.transform.position+=Vector3.forward * zZoomFactor ;
                     }
     //if mouse is scrolled forward
     } else if (Input.GetAxis ("Mouse ScrollWheel")<0f){
             Debug.Log ("MiddleMouse scroll forward");
         target.transform.position+=Vector3.forward * -zZoomFactor ;
         }
     //set limits for max and min values of zoom

     Vector3 clampedZposition = target.transform.position;
     clampedZposition.z = Mathf.Clamp (clampedZposition.z, zoomMin, zoomMax);
     target.transform.position = clampedZposition;

 //tried this below and error message said to use temporary variable

// target.transform.position.z= Mathf.Clamp(transform.position.z, 5f, -5f);

     }

 }
