Flying chain - Projectile Particle Effect

I'm making a card game where the player deploys weapons on a ship. There's one weapon that's called "The Grappler", which I'm trying to create a cool shoot/projectile effect on.

The desired look would be a big metal hook as a projectile with an attached chain on it.

I've tried some different approaches but never lead anywhere. I'm thinking this could be achieved by some kind of particle effect with a link/chain texture.

Any ideas on this would be very much appreciated :)

Have you tried hinge joint yet?

I looked into that, could work. Had several ideas but was worried how reliable the physics would be and how taxing on performance it would be.

1: Instantiate a new link with hinge joints as a function of distance of the flying hook. 2: Have a trigger box around my weapon with an already modeled hinge joint chain. Then only render the mesh as it flies out of the box following the hook.

What do you think? I'd hope to solve this by "cheating".

If you concern about performance and there is no need for the chain to realistically interact with any dynamic object in real-time, pre-bake the chain animation in application like Blender and import that into Unity would be the better option.
