How do I make the same texture look the same on terrain or objects

When I texture a terrain (as a whole or by the brush) it comes out looking way darker than the same texture on cubes (upper right is on cube) I've tried different shaders and materials but no luck. If it helps when I added a pure white texture and painted it on the terrain it looks greyish blue instead of white. Any ideas?
