Question by mpavlinsky · Jun 23, 2011 at 02:06 PM · importmacmayapc.ma

Importing a .ma Maya model across non-licensed systems.

I have two machines I am using to develop a Unity project for iPhone/Android. One is a PC with a Maya 2008 license, the other is a Mac with no Maya license.

I am currently trying to add an animated character to my Unity project in the form of an .ma file. When I import it on the licensed PC everything is fine, but after submitting the assets to my Perforce server and downloading them on my Mac the asset just shows up as a "default asset" which cannot be used for anything, which is not surprising since it is still in .ma format.

Is there a way to do an import with Maya ascii/binary files if you need to access the assets on unlicensed machines or do people just generally always export to FBX and load it that way in a situation like this?

I seem to recall reading that the demo version of Maya is enough for Unity importing to work.

Thanks for the reply.

The demo only lasts for 30 days, do you know if the importing features in Unity still available after that trial period is up without buying another Maya seat?

I could be wrong but I hear Unity converts everything to FBX anyway. Is the FBX SDK and FBX Converter available for MAC?

Ha 2011. Funny this popped up in the active list.
