why does my int increase to infinity?

 public void basicRules()
 {
     playerOneNeighbors = GameObject.FindGameObjectsWithTag ("player1");
      Vector3[] positions = new Vector3[playerOneNeighbors.Length] ;
         
                 for (int i = 0; i < playerOneNeighbors.Length; i++)
                 {
                     positions[i] = playerOneNeighbors[i].transform.position ;
                     Vector3 offsett = positions[i] - transform.position;
                     float sqrDistance = offsett.sqrMagnitude;
                     if(sqrDistance < distance * distance)
                     {
                         this.neighbors++;
                     }
                 }
 }

the idea is that you click to spawn blocks. those blocks get found with the tag player1. this bit of code is on the prefab of the player1 block, to find the closest spawned blocks, increasing the neighbors int.

the problem is that when i just place one cube the neighbors int will increase until i pause or quit the program. i also tried this.neighbors+= 1; it has the same problem. basicRules(); is in the update() located on the prefab. the number increases until unity does not recognize it since it becomes so large

If the code is in the update, it will just keep fetching and counting the neighboring blocks each frame, forever. It sounds like you want to only call it when you place a block, and you probably also want to reset "this.neighbors" to zero at the start of the function.

Also, the positions Vector3 array is unnecessary, you can rewrite it without the array as such:

  public void basicRules()
  {
      playerOneNeighbors = GameObject.FindGameObjectsWithTag ("player1");
                  for (int i = 0; i < playerOneNeighbors.Length; i++)
                  {
                      Vector3 position = playerOneNeighbors[i].transform.position ;
                      Vector3 offsett = position - transform.position;
                      float sqrDistance = offsett.sqrMagnitude;
                      if(sqrDistance < distance * distance)
                      {
                          this.neighbors++;
                      }
                  }
  }
