Asset file is changed when the ScriptableObject is changed

So I have an asset that was created using AssetDatabase.CreateAsset

When this asset is loaded into a (custom)ScriptableObject instance and that instance is changed, the content of the asset file is also changed immediately after the object has been changed.

This happens even though AssetDatabase.SaveAssets hasn't been called.

Is this supposed to happen? I circumvented this before by creating a separate instance and then copying over the values and when I'm ready to save I would save that instance.
