Question by Spittin_fire · Jul 07, 2011 at 07:29 AM · magnitude

Unity Refrence example for sqrMagnitude not working

the code I try

using UnityEngine; using System.Collections;

public class example : MonoBehaviour { public Transform other; public float closeDistance = 5.0F; void Update() { if (other) { float sqrLen = other.position - transform.position.sqrMagnitude; if (sqrLen < closeDistance * closeDistance) print("The other transform is close to me!");

} } }

on the line float sqrLen = other.position - transform.position.sqrMagnitude;

it says I cannot use - between float and vector3 ext. this example is almost directly out of unity's reference that comes with the program (but I have made some changes)... please show me how to do this for I need to get understanding of distance in 3D space.. thanks

yep, i went to change my code and tried hitting the 0101 thing and it said "enter code here" and i DID and it looks like that up there again... Unity and its website, and even the refrence it gives me is starting to slowly become weak... sorry if that offends anyone, but its really pissing me off by now.

You are missing some brackets. When I go check the reference, the needed brackets are there:

 var sqrLen = (other.position - transform.position).sqrMagnitude;

Hello Jonas, thanks for your time sir... however, Yes, yes they are.. I slopped that together up there was in a hurry, however when I copy and paste the whole code onto the unity3d script editor it says cannot use the '-'... float sqrLen = other.position - transform.position.sqr$$anonymous$$agnitude;
