Question by UltimateLogicGames · Sep 12, 2017 at 09:08 AM · unity 5terraintoolscompatibilityvegetation

Creating parts of terrain with different tools

I never created terrain or vegetation. Can someone explain one t$$anonymous$$ng? To create terrain with simple trees and grass I can use some free tools. I choose one for terrain and another one for some better vegetation.

So is there any compatibility t$$anonymous$$ng between tools? I mean, if I start with one tool, will some other tool be able to put grass correctly on the terrain surface?

Asking because I understand that if I do it using one single tool, it knows what it does and can add vegetation correctly. But what if tools are different for different parts? What is the workflow? I should know how to approach before I start.

If I get you perfectly, you intend to create a terrain with grasses? The tools are well separated in unity. Click on your terrain and check through the settings. If you run into further problems, let us know.

I guess I figured out how to work, so I just create a terrain object and then paint everything on it. It looks like Unity knows how to position vegetation on the surface.

But one problem. I wanted to decrease the size of the brush and I just changed Control Texture Resolution 512 to 1024, then all the painting changed to default on the whole terrain. I saved the project before that but it still loads without textures now. How to restore my painting?

If you attempt to alter the resolution of the heightmap, things will restore to default. Try to re-open the saved scene. If you didn't save the scene, you cant recover your paintings and besides it is very easy to change brush size in unity. Suppose you click on "Raise/Lower terrain" button, you should notice the brush size, opacity etc settings. If there is any problem, please post and try to attach pictures. Saves me from assuming lol.

I saved the project (not the scene), scene remained old file "scene_1". Changed heightmap resolution, it erased the painting. I closed Unity to reopen with old scene, but as prompted I saved the modified scene as "scene_2", not to rewrite the old one. Then closed Unity, reopened, but the painting didn't restore in any of the two scenes, old and new.

I know the brush size slider, the size 1 is a square of approximately 2 meters comparing to other models on the map, even comparing to standard trees that you can put on the map. I need the size 1 to be 4 times smaller.
