Dynamically added text does not render

I am trying something very simple: Add a cube, add some text, set the cube as parent of the text, and then display it. This has worked fine when I try to add the components manually, but I can't get it to work with the code.

This is how the text looks like manually added:

This is how it looks when I add it using C#:

As you can see, it uses a Rect Transform instead of Transform. It also uses Canvas Renderer instead of Mesh Renderer.

This is my code:

 void Start () {
     cube = GameObject.CreatePrimitive(PrimitiveType.Cube);
     cube.transform.position = new Vector3(5, 1, 5);
     cube.transform.localScale = new Vector3(5, 1, 7);
     cube.GetComponent<Renderer>().material.color = new Color(0, 0, 255);

     GameObject newText = new GameObject("Text");
     text = newText.AddComponent<Text>();
     text.transform.SetParent(cube.transform);
     text.text = "Hello";
     text.font = Font.CreateDynamicFontFromOSFont("Arial", 500);
     text.color = new Color(255, 255, 255);
     text.fontSize = 500;
     text.transform.position = new Vector3(0, 0.5f, 0.2f);
     text.transform.localScale = new Vector3(0.005f, 0.005f, 0.005f);
 }

Can someone tell me what I'm doing wrong? Am I completely off course? I basically want to convert the first screenshot into code, if you understand what I mean.

I have tried changing all the sizes from small to ridiculously large, but they're simply not there.
