How to create a Minecraft-like fog when stuff around player is not being drawn?

Hello, in order to reduce on lag and make my game more unique, I'd like to create a circle of fog around the player, but without being able to see any outlines in the distance and having everything that is unseen undrawn. I enabled linear fog, but as I said, I can see the outlines in the distance, which must mean that it is still drawing the objects, and not helping with lag at all. Is there not a setting that would let me have my game not draw the objects in the distance?

If you want less objects to be drawn, change the camera's far clipping plane.
