Second camera only starts working after I modify clipping plane in inspector

I am using 2 cameras, one for sprites/tiles and one for particle effects so that I can put particle effects in front of the sprites.

In the main camera Culling mask is set to everything except for the custom Particles layer.

The particles camera Culling mask is set to just the particles layer and Clear flags is set to Depth only.

If I adjust any of the Particles camera settings, the particles somehow become visible and the effect works properly. However, if I try to adjust the settings via script, nothing happens.

I had similar troubles with the second camera. I put the view into the upper right corner. While in Editor mode, It was not rendering in the game window until I changed slightly one of its settings. Then, in the play mode, it was rendering in one scene... but not in the other. Same problem when I run the build.

I guess the problem was the equal "priority" of both cameras: depth = 0 for both, so Unity did not know what to do with the second one.

Depth value should be different for different cameras. As the hint in the inspector says:

"A camera with a larger depth is drawn atop of a camera with a smaller depth [-100, 100]"
