Expose game state data to outside programs

I'm trying to get some hands on experience with both deep learning and unity, having played with neither of these before. The general idea is to make a simple unity game with a maze that you need to get to the end of (similar to to the one in the first tutorial) and then have an AI learn to get through it on it's own. The problem is getting the Python-based AI game state information. I really don't want to go the route of optical recognition of state, and the only other things I can think of are saving all the relevant state information into a file on the system every tick and having the AI read from the same file at the same time, or perhaps trying to hackishly read the state information straight from memory. Neither of these sound like great options to me however and I figure there has to be some easier way to get the data from unity to python seeing as I have access to the game source. Any thoughts/advice?
