Creating a simple default tiled texture

Hi, I'm having some issues creating a default texture for my meshes. It's a material I would like to use when developing levels and trying out physics, prior to implementing any form of art. I have however encountered an issue with my texture being stretched, when e.g. a cube doesn't have the same X and Y units.

I've imported a simple texture to Unity: alt text

Attached it to a material, then to an object: alt text

The material is set to have the Tiling "X: 10 and Y: 10".

As you can see the tiling is now cramped together on the Y-axis, and if I try to modify it to be proper on the Y-axis, it will become stretched on the X-axis. Is there a way to avoid this issue? I've seen solutions involving code, but I'd prefer not being forced to attach a script to every object I insert into my test scenes.
