Unity Monodevelop problem: cannot type ' or " quotation mark

Hi all,

As I have downloaded the new Unity 3.4 it also installed a new build of the monodevelop editor. The problem is that from now on, I cannot type a single or double quotation mark anymore. So the ' and " symbol are not typed when I press on the button on my keyboard. This is quite annoying to say the least.

I have been checking around and other text editors don't seem to have the problem. I also downloaded the normal 2.4 release of Monodevelop and this one seems to do things right. Also when I switch keyboard layout to azerty - Belgian I can type the quotation marks too.

I am working on MacBook Pro OSX Snow Leopard which has an azerty (Belgian) keyboard. But for coding I use an external US international keyboard. The problem occurs when I am using the US international keyboard setting.

Can someone tell me how to solve this problem or can anyone give me a link to a previous version of the Unity Monodevelop build?

Thanks in advance, Lieven

This issue seems to be back with the $$anonymous$$onodevelop version shipping with Unity 4.0.

I am having the same problem, I though it was my keyboard because I recently bought a Razer blackwidow. But it indeed is the update. I will try all of the other options aswell. $$anonymous$$aybe you could change the dictionary of your keyboard and make a key that you never use such as "|" actually act as the "" signs. This may help but there is no garanty. I hope I helped anyways.

This thread has shifted quite a few times and I believe not everyone has the exact same problem. But to let you all know, my problem of not being able to type double quotes " on a $$anonymous$$acBook with a US keyboard set to international english has been going on between from Unity 4.0 and until 4.2. I am happy to report that the new version of $$anonymous$$onoDevelop coming with Unity 4.3 now works fine.

Seems that this problem continues to happen even 3 years later. It's weird that a platform that excels in so much like Unity ships with this kind of bug!

I realize this question is almost 4 years old, but I have the same problem in the latest version of Unity (4.6.1 with $$anonymous$$onodevelop 4.0.1). I even tried the latest version of XamarinStudio (5.7) and the problem is still there. I suppose this will never be fixed and we just have to live with it?

FYI, the latest Unity build (3.4.1) has solved this problem. For me, it works fine now.

Sorry, but I am using Unity 4.1.5f1 and the reported problem still occurs. $$anonymous$$aybe it only happen on a $$anonymous$$ac with a particular configuration: I am using $$anonymous$$acOS X 10.8.4 with "U.S. International PC" keyboard setting and $$anonymous$$onoDevelop 2.8.2, the one that came with Unity. The issue seems to be $$anonymous$$onoDevelop-specific; any other application works fine.

Hi, as far as I'm concerned, it never worked since Unity 4.x. I'm still using the $$anonymous$$onodevelop version from my Unity 3.5 install folder.

I had the same problem using United States-International as a Input Language. I fixed this by using a different Input Language. Goto Region and Language and choose English (United States).

Same here, quotes can't be entered with the "U.S. International - PC" setting. Workaround: open system prefs, click "language and text", then "input sources" and enable a second input source (say, "U.S."). Finally, mark "allow a different one for each document".

Now it works, but it's annoying if you need the original keyboard layout in other apps (very likely). Seems like a regression, as the previous version didn't have this bug.

Best answer so far. I am using this workaround and, for the accents, I use the key codes listed here: http://abre.la/$$anonymous$$acAccentCodes

This is indeed only thing that works, out of all answers here today.

This also tells me the new $$anonymous$$onoDevelop (mine's 2.8.2 right) that comes with Unity 4.1.x (no such issue on Unity 4.0.x), is probably buggy. But it's not even a good idea to report this bug to monodevelop, if it's indeed real, because Unity is not using latest $$anonymous$$onoDevelop... Sigh.

Using $$anonymous$$onoDevelop 2.8.2 and yes confirming it has the bug on Windows 7 Ultimate too, with US International $$anonymous$$eyboard layout as well

Edit: Just to let you know that on Windows 7 I managed to make it work finally as: Language - English (Caribbean) w/ US keyboard layout.

Tried other combinations but not luck, that was the only one that worked in my case

This works perfectly! I mean, perfectly would be for Unity to solve this and not make users change $$anonymous$$eyboard/Language configurations and all, but cool!

Guys, i found a better solution for this problem. You can create a code template for the "wrong" double quote. Then, when you need to create a string, you just need to press the wrong " and , just like we normally do for the while template, and things like that.

Much better, than keep changing the keyboard layout.

Well, changing the keyboard input doesn't really solve the problem : Now, you have the quotes but you non longer have the accents ... and the reason most of us are using the US International keyboard is because we needed the accents in the first place! Laure
