Does a SphereCast() always return the closest collider?

Am trying to find a definitive answer to whether a SphereCast() always returns the hit from the closest collider. (I am not keen on running the multiple hit array and processing it myself unless it is a given that the SphereCast by itself returns either an arbitrary collider or the furthest by default).

It seems not to be the case from the code I'm running but there isn't anything definitive in the documentation that I can find.

Any help would be most appreciated.
