Moving rigidbody children of parent rigidbody.

I'm building a Rowing Simulation for the HTC Vive. I currently have the following hierarchy for my boat:

- Boat Container (RigidBody)

  ->Boat Mesh

  ->Left U-ring (RigidBody)

  ->Right U-ring (RigidBody)

  ->Left Paddle (RigidBody)
         ->leftshaft

         ->leftblade

  ->Right Paddle (RigidBody)

         ->rightshaft

         ->rightblade

Both the left and right u-rings and both the left and right paddles are rigid bodies because I have set up each paddle connected to each u-ring with a configurable joint so that it pivots around that point. The boat container parent is also a rigidbody and I try to move the boat for some logical check condition with the position of the blades and my boat moves but my u-rings and my paddles don't move even if i set them (all children that have rigid bodies) all as kinematic before moving my boat container . I first make sure that all children of boat container are kinematic and then I move the parent and then I set them back as non-kinematic so that I get the joint like behavior with the children but the boat moves and the children (u-rings and paddles) don't move with the boat for some reason. I tried using methods like rigidbody.movePosition, Velocity, and addForce but all of these work on the boat but not on the rigidbody children (u-rings and paddles). Any ideas on what I should do?
