Question by ColtinLaurance1 · Aug 06, 2018 at 12:52 PM · vrrendertexture

How to put an image on the inside of a half sphere?

Trying to place half a panorama on the inside of a sphere so that you can see the image as you would as a 360 photo. This would allow me to put it on the side of a window so it can be viewed though the window.

Create or get a model for a hemisphere, flip its normals so that they point inward, set up texture coordinates, and then just texture the resulting model with the 360 photo.

Would this work for a half circle?

I'm not sure what you mean by using a half-circle: that is a 2D shape, so I don't know how you would apply a texture onto it.

So I am completely new to unity what exactly are texture maps?

Well, that's a huge topic in itself, but basically if the textures are the 2D images you put on 3D object, you have to specify how the 2D image wraps onto the 3D one - this is called mapping.
Check out the first part of this link, and this answer, and then maybe this forum thread. This should give a basic understanding, but actually doing it is usually a 3D artists job.

The way I completed my original goal was creating the hemispheres in blender than unwrapping said hemispheres so they can be viewed in the UV edit mode inside of blender. After that I stretched the UV map to properly cover the entire image inside of blender. I then imported my hemisphere into unity and applied a shader to flip normals and then a material with my panorama file. Make sure that you use or Photoshop your Panoramas to only be 180 degrees.

The Hemispheres I created were made from $$anonymous$$esh UV spheres I then manually removed half of the UV Sphere to make it a Hemisphere.
