Particles being emitted with distorted scaling

I am using Emit() on pooled particle systems that are configured procedurally during gameplay to create various effects for my game. Everything works as expected except particle scaling from previous emissions seems to "bleed through" and distort subsequent emissions.

This is how I reset the particles systems between each emission:

 private ParticleSystem system;

 private void Reset()
 {
     system.Stop(false, ParticleSystemStopBehavior.StopEmittingAndClear);
     transform.parent = null;
     transform.localScale = Vector3.one;
     var main = system.main;
     main.startSize = 1;
     main.startSizeMultiplier = 1;
     main.simulationSpace = ParticleSystemSimulationSpace.Local;
 }

Yet for each time a particle system is reused the more the emitted particles start to deviate from their intended size. This keeps going until all particles are either so small that they are invisible or so large that they cover the entire screen.

I have tried various combinations of stopping or clearing the particle systems before emitting, but so far nothing has had any effect.
