GetComponentInParent doesnt appear to work in editor mode

When I call a script that uses GetComponentInParent from a custom inspector via a button, it returns null, while calling the same script at runtime returns the component.

Is this as intended?

What do you mean by call a script? Do you mean a method? What does the method do? When is GetComponentInParent called?

Hi @peachpieproductions

By default, all Mono Behaviours are only executed in play mode. so if you want to get a script that inherits Mono behaviour class , it doesn't work in editor mode without adding [ExecuteInEditMode] above your script.just add [ExecuteInEditMode] above your script

Thank you for your response!

The problem is, the function runs just fine in the editor without needing [executeineditmode] because the function is called externally from a Custom Inspector button. The entire function runs except for the getcomponentinparent line. I hope that makes more sense. I can explain further if need be.
