Why is _Color needed for proper shadows?

I'm trying to write some of my own shaders. Everything was going well until I actually gave them to fellow artists to use in a project. In writing a custom alpha test (cutout) shader, I've discovered that simply removing the _Color input from the built-in Transparency/Cutout/Diffuse shader (so I've only got the _MainTex and the _Cutoff values left) makes the shadow casting break. Why is this? What does _Color have to do with the built in shadow casting algorithms?
