GridLayoutGroup children's transform.position returns incorrect value during first frame

I have set up an object with a GridLayoutGroup and added children with LayoutElement to it. In the scene view, the objects are positioned correctly.

I also added separate objects in the scene that I move on top of the children in Start(). Here is a code snippet of what I mean:

 overlayItems[0].transform.position = gridLayoutObject.transform.GetChild(0).transform.position;


When I run the game, the positions of overlayItems[0] is completely off. When I placed Debug.Log(gridLayoutObject.transform.GetChild(0).transform.position) in Update(), I get the following:

For some reason, the position of the child transform within GridLayoutGroup is incorrect during the first frame despite being correct in the scene viewer, and then finds its correct position.

This started happening with the latest Unity version, before this was not an issue and the positions were always being set correctly. Why is this happening?

Turns out that GridLayoutGroup doesn't position its child elements until the end of the first frame (which is strange because I had relied on this before and it worked perfectly fine until now).

To solve this, I added the following code to rebuild the positions before fetching them:

 LayoutRebuilder.ForceRebuildLayoutImmediate(gridLayoutObject.GetComponent<RectTransform>());
