Playing animation when the heirachy has been changed.

Hi guys. I'm sorry if this has been answered elsewhere - I have looked, and come up blank. I'm pulling my hair out on this one.

I'm making a simple boxing game, with two figures set up as ragdolls that then use physics to punch, move etc. I didn't intend using animations at all, and since all the physics were being applied to the armature directly I removed the highest level gameObject from the models, so the highest level in the hierarchy is now Armature. (The level I deleted was causing issues with rotation and position calculations, since when I was moving the characters through the ragdoll/physics, the "empty" was staying at the character spawn).

I've since realised making block action is outrageously difficult (I tried Rigidbody,Moveposition etc), and so settled on just using an animation for this one thing.

I've coded it so that when the block button is pressed, all the rigidbodies on the model are made kinematic, and the animation plays in the Mecanim state machine. I've checked the animation is selected in the animator state box.

But my character just freezes (due to the isKinematic = true).

I've tried playing the animation without making the rigidbodies kinematic. I've even tried disabling the Animator until the button press, no joy. There's no error message, but the animation just doesn't play. You can watch the blue "playing" marker move around the Mecanim state as it's meant to.

I tried adding the animation controller to a new iteration of the model and it works, presumably because the hierarchy has it's top level back, However if I move the character around by adding forces to the ragdoll, when I press the block button the model teleports back to the spawn. I tried changing the Root Node in the model import settings, but that just changes the orientation of the model, not the transform.

Does anyone know how I can get this animation to play, without having a higher level to my gameObject please?
