Question by GliderGuy · Dec 18, 2018 at 01:54 PM · transformarrays

Inconsistencies between TransformAccessArray and NativeArray?

I have noticed that the syntax for TransformAccessArray differs slightly from other array types such as NativeArray. This difference only appears when attempting to find whether it IsCreated or not, like so:

 //NativeArray's IsCreated.
 if (nativeArray.IsCreated)
 {
     nativeArray.Dispose();
 }
 //TransformAccessArray's isCreated
 if (transformAccessArray.isCreated)
 {
     transformAccessArray.Dispose();
 }

Why is this? They both require capital letters for their respective Dispose functions, why does this not carry over for their IsCreated ones? Is there a method to this madness? Does the inconsistency have some value or reason behind it that I'm unaware of?

Notice: I have only compared TransformAccessArray to NativeArray in terms of syntax, so if there are other types of arrays that have their IsCreated's in TransformAccessArray's format -- i apologize for jumping to conclusions about possible oddities.

from the Syntax highlighting I would say one is a property while the other is a regular bool.
accessing just a variable is faster than a property when iterated millions of times over at once, maybe that's it.

Hmm... I really thought this was the answer until i investigated the code in $$anonymous$$icrosoft Visual Studio. Turns out both (IsCreated's) are indeed Boolean -- not just one... So i suppose that narrows down the answers a bit. :|

The TransformAccessArray is new and used for the new ECS Job system, while NativeArray is an old part of the API that allowed you to allocate RA$$anonymous$$ resources through Unity's API ins$$anonymous$$d of letting the C# Runtime Environment handle it. $$anonymous$$y guess is that it gives you more control over the $$anonymous$$emory but overall isn't very useful otherwise.

I suppose that could lead to the inconsistency... $$anonymous$$aybe they decided to change their preferred syntax for IsCreated along they way and forgot to update the old one? I mean it's a possibility, right?
