Question by impurekind · Jan 04, 2019 at 04:57 PM · destroychildparent transform

How to destroy object with children with colliders on trigger/collision check?

I have an empty object that contains two child objects with their own colliders and triggers (the parent and children are all tagged with the same tag). When the player collides with either of the child objects with the tag, I want to destroy the whole thing, parent, children and all. How do I do this?

Oh, and here's what I currently use:

 private void OnTriggerStay(Collider other)
 {
    if (other.tag == "GunPickup")
     {
          Destroy(other.gameObject);
     }
 }

And I'm trying to use this, as suggested in another topic, but an error comes up saying the collider doesn't contain a definition for parent:

 private void OnTriggerStay(Collider other)
     {
        if (other.tag == "GunPickup")
         {
              Destroy(other.parent.gameObject);
         }
     }

The line you want is

 Destroy(other.transform.parent.gameObject);

That's done the trick. Cheers. :)

Destroy(gameObject) on the parent will destroy both the parent and children I think you can just use onCollisionEnter/onTriggerEnter just like if there were no children. I haven't tested it but this should work:

     private void OnCollisionEnter(Collision collision)
     {
         if (collision.gameObject.tag == "Insert layer that player is on here")
         {
             Destroy(gameObject);
         }
     }

The parent is assigned the same tag and layer as the children but only the specific child where the collision takes place is being destroyed. The parent is presumably not affected by any collision check stuff directly because it has no collision boxes or anything else. It's just an empty object that I use to hold the other objects in so I can create a single prefab object. So my question is how do I delete the parent and everything else when it's only the child that's triggering the collision and the collision check code is finding the particular child as the collision object in such a case?
