Question by said2890 · Feb 24, 2019 at 11:23 PM · splashscreen

Disabled splash screen, have Unity Plus, WebGL still freezing when running in background

I require my WebGL application to be running when switched to a different tab in a browser and there is a setting to solve that in Unity: run in background. However, "run in background" only works after the Unity logo has been presented to a user. In other words, if I open the application and instantly switch to another tab, wait no matter for how long and switch back, I will see the splash screen first and only then I can switch tabs and hope that the application will run in background. That is probably done on purpose so that a user does not miss the splash screen.

My problem is that even after removing the Splash screen (since I have got Unity Plus), the application is still not running completely in background. It stops for the same number of seconds, even though this time it is not presenting the splash screen. It did disable the splash screen, but running in background only triggers after the invisible splash screen animation has been played.

If I remember right this is a security issue with web browsers themselves. A lot of dangerous sites will open a new web browser window in the background unfocused as so it will appear behind the currently open window. To stop malicious content from being run without the users knowledge browsers stop content from running before the window has been focused. Like wise if your app is loading then you switch to a new tab it could be stopping it from updating in an unfocused window. I would think if this actually a function you should be considering, and if it is give a warning when the user opens the page to keep it open until it is running.

Thank you for your answer. The thing is when I switch to a new tab while the app is loading, Chrome does not stop if from loading, however, it stops exactly at splash screen. The reason I need this function is to be able to browse different tabs while the app is downloading all the necessary files coming after splash screen.
