Question by GuyFawkes · Aug 27, 2011 at 10:07 PM · characterparentweapon

How do I parent a weapon to my character?

I would like to make it where when the user presses a button, say g, it plays an animation for the arm moving up, and the weapon is now visible. I'm pretty sure I know how to do all of that. Except one thing. How do I parent the weapon to my character's hand?

you drag the weapon to the hand, or where exactly u want it, and then in the hierarchy, you drag the weapon on top of the hand object(the hand is a separate object right? Because u want to have it animated?)

No it's an one of the armatures on the body. I tried doing what you said, but with an armature. It doesn't rotate along with the armature on the y axis. (I think that's the axis. What ever one is pretty much going up) Why is this?

The answer is correct, so you're somehow not doing it right. You may need to post a video or something to explain how it's not working.

yeah. another way is to make the gun like a part of the hand, if you know what i mean. make them part of the same object ins$$anonymous$$d of using parenting. it probably wouldnt look any different.... its just you wouldnt have to go through the trouble of parenting.... but thats just another thought

That's not a very good idea. A gun needs no mesh deformation, so skinning would be a waste of CPU, and a mess to get right. Also, it's not very flexible - only one gun, unless you duplicate the whole hand.

Parenting is trivial. He has missed some detail, that's all.

Show a picture of your Hierarchy window and the problem should be clear.
