Why is getcomponent suddenly not working

On break, I worked on my project a lot but now that I'm back nothing seems to work. Even the "getcomponent" isn't working. I get a nullrefrenceexception on line 22 when I use a private rigidbody and fetch it using get component. However when i use a public rigidbody and drag the rigidbody in it works fine. Although you may be thinking why don't i just use the public rigid body, it is because i think many of the other problems in my code may be due to a similar bug. I just want to see if it is unity that is screwing up or if there is a problem with my code. PS. the code in the image is in the homingmissile script

Are you sure you haven't accidentally attached the script on another object which does not have a Rigidbody2D component?

 void Start()
 {
      // target
     rigidbody = GetComponent<Rigidbody2D>();
     Debug.Log( "Is rigidbody null? " + ( rigidbody == null ), gameObject ) ;
 }

Then, click on the message to highlight the gameObject holding the script.
