Is it possible to raycast a prefab that is not in any scene?

I'm trying to create a tool to help my team on terrain creation. Since we are using an hexagonal pattern for the ground, and the logic, we cannot use the Unity Terrain, and have to develop our own tools. One of these tools will be a stamp. I want the level designers to be able to use a prefab as a stamp, and therefore I need to be able to cast rays into the prefab.

This could be as easy as instantiating the prefab into the current scene, then perform the ray casting, but I felt this would be a dirty way, and so I tried a different approach: to use Collider.Raycast() for each collider in the prefab. This didn't work, and, after a deeper search about Collider.Raycast(), I presume this function only works for the currently loaded scene/s.

Luckily, I found some hope in this thread: link:https://forum.unity.com/threads/raycast-in-the-prefab-scene.647548/ . Here, @runevision explains how to raycast on the prefab scene, which is great. The bad news is a non instantiated prefab doesn't have a scene.

So, does anyone know if it is possible to raycast a prefab that has not been instantiated into any scene? An alternative could be creating an on-the-fly scene just to have the prefab instantiated, but this one does also sound a bit dirty.
