Smart way of using servers and databases in unity

Hi guys! We are making game which uses Hostinger servers to host our mysqli database and to access the data sends WWW Requests to some php file link on the server and converts that to text, then we split that text into peaces of information we need. so my question is: Is this wrong way of client communication to server ? and can SSL help to avoid hackers finding out what info does php get or return ?
