My controller script is not reading gameobjects as intended.

So I have multiple gem prefabs as GameObjects with the script GemProperties and I am trying to reference a GameObject into another controller script GemParticleController to activate particles when a specific colored gem is clicked and dragged. For the most part, I have been successful, but it only works for the GameObject that was placed last. The selectedGem was able to read for the correct gem in the GemProperties, but all gems in GemParticleController read null except for the last GameObject, which was able to read as selectedGem. This is the bare bones that I think is relevant to my problem, but I have more to the code if needed. I am new so I am not sure on many things and any help is appreciated.

         }
         if(isBeingHeld == false){
             sprite.sortingOrder = 1;
             selectedGem = null;
         }
     }
 
     private void OnMouseDown(){
